July 2020: Parking Citation Fraud

WHAT IS THIS NOTICE
A crime has occurred that does not meet CLERY timely warning criteria, but it is necessary to notify the community due to lack of suspect identity.

LOCATION OF INCIDENT/CRIME
685 Kleiber Hall Drive, Davis, CA 95616 (Parking Structure)

SUMMARY OF CRIME/INCIDENT
Unknown suspect/s created false parking citations and a website (ucdpark.com) that claim to be “an independent parking enforcement organization based around UC Davis”. The suspect/s placed an unknown number of paper citations on vehicles advising them that their infraction was payable online through the website.

If anybody believes they have received a false citation or has paid for a false citation at ucdpark.com, please contact the UC Davis Police Department at (530)752-1727.

Nobody except UC Davis Transportation Services or the UC Davis Police Department has authority to issue parking citation on UC Davis property.

UC Davis does not process payment for any fees or services via PayPal.

CAMPUS COMMUNITY ONLINE FRAUD TIPS FROM UC DAVIS POLICE

  • Verify UCD links, websites, and e-mails if they appear suspicious.
  • Consider your form of payment.
    • Wiring money (Western Union or MoneyGram) and gift cards are not protected moneys and are difficult to track.
    • Credit cards have fraud protection
  • Don’t give personal information – people may be posing as government officials (IRS) or a trusted company (banks, Apple, etc.)
  • Be careful of clicking unexpected links received via e-mail and text.
    • Do online searches of the company or messages you received.
